Approach to the Ice

South Iceland · 2022

From the bow of a small inflatable boat, a jagged wall of glacier ice rises across the green-grey water of a glacial lagoon. Lagoons like this have formed across South Iceland as glaciers retreated, leaving deep basins that filled with meltwater. Blocks that break from the face, a process called calving, float away as icebergs that slowly drift and melt. Low cloud and choppy water make the approach feel like a small expedition.
