Autumn at Gyeongbokgung

Seoul, South Korea · 2016

Red maple leaves frame a small hexagonal pavilion sitting on an island in a still pond, its reflection perfectly doubled in the water. This is Hyangwonjeong, added to the grounds of Gyeongbokgung Palace in the 1870s and reached by a slender wooden bridge. The palace itself was first built in 1395, early in the Joseon Dynasty, as the main royal residence in Seoul. The palace grounds were beautiful in autumn, and this quiet corner felt like the essence of the season.
