Before the Paddle-Out

Cocoa Beach, Florida · 2016

Wet sand turns into a mirror at twilight, doubling a surfer and the tall board standing beside them as a sliver of orange glows at the horizon. To the right, the long pier marches out to sea, its pilings reflected in the shallow film of water left by the outgoing tide. Cocoa Beach sits just south of Cape Canaveral, and early risers here sometimes catch a rocket climbing into the dawn from the nearby launch pads. The town also has deep surfing roots and is the hometown of eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater.
