Belize Pier

Belize · 2017

Weathered wooden boards run straight out to a small thatched palapa, with a boat tied up alongside and soft peach light spreading across the sky above the sea. The vertical frame emphasizes the long lines of the pier, pulling the eye from the sandy shallows toward the horizon. Palapas, open-sided shelters roofed with dried palm fronds, are a traditional form of building along the coasts of Mexico and Central America. Out on the cayes of Belize, a local name for its small islands pronounced like keys, they offer shade by day and a place to watch the light change in the evening.
