Into the Cloud

Dolomites, Italy · 2016

Late in 2016 in northern Italy, the day started clear and sunny, but a few miles into the hike the clouds came blowing up the mountain. Within minutes the peaks became gray silhouettes, appearing and vanishing in the mist, while a lone hiker in a yellow jacket kept climbing along the snowy ridge. That small figure gives the scene its scale and shows how quickly weather can swallow an entire range. Shifts like this are typical at altitude, where warm valley air rises, cools and condenses against the cold rock faces.
