Sunrise at 1,000 Feet

Arabian Desert, UAE · 2015

Morning breaks over the horizon and the desert below lights up in a pattern of rippling sand. From a balloon at about 1,000 feet, the dunes look like ripples on the floor of a shallow sea. Low-angle light like this reveals textures that disappear entirely by midday, when the sun flattens the landscape. It is a fleeting moment of color and calm.
